“Overture to St. Joseph”
David K. Maki
In 1984, David Maki was selected by the City of St. Joseph to compose a piece in honor of the City’s sesquicentennial, its 150th birthday.
The name of the piece that David wrote is the “Overture to St. Joseph”. Before today, the piece has been played only one time by the St. Joseph Municipal Band in 1984 conducted by Mr. John E. N. Howard.
David Maki was a well-known local musician and sound recording engineer. His formal musical training was received at Western Michigan University, the University of Michigan and the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. David began his musical career at the age of 6 and he continued to play a wide variety of musical styles until his death in October 2010 at the age of 52.
David’s wife LeeAnn, his many friends and family hope you enjoy “Overture to St. Joseph”.

peace, love, groove
My parents sent me the program in the mail! Seeing this video brought back him showing me the penciled score as he was writing it. The opening was dawn over the bluff I think. He worried about the French horn running out of breath during the slide up before the Precipitando and dropping pitch and they did! The synco tutti is all Dave and he liked that eighth figure because he knew it was easier to play. Dave always thought about the artist. I asked about doing a question answer thing but he said St. Joe was about action not contemplation so it is all forward movement. This is where repeating a phrase segment does not constitute musical development & Dave believed in that! This would have been longer if they would have given him more time. I think he wrote more or even another movement but chucked it for some reason. Thanks for the video. Miss ya Dave!

Glad you got the program..does that mean your parents where there? I wish I could remember more of what the music stands for, I know it told a story or represented things of the city. I'm so happy you remember more than I. Another thing I wished I would have asked him....maybe someday.
