Great idea

Mark, Dave's brother, told me a great idea today. Elisa had talked about the music she felt Dave influenced her to take interest in. How about everyone else?

Me next.... Chick Corea (I was a lukewarm fan before Dave), Yellow Jackets, Claire Fisher and numerous other jazz artists. Elvis Costello. He intensified my love for Yes, Pink Floyd and Steely Dan.

peace, love, groove

  1. Chicago for sure, Chick Corea, I didn't know Dave liked Pink Floyd. The Crusaders & Joe Sample, Steely Dan. Alman Brothers Band, Dave liked Eat a Peach a lot. I think I made Dave hip to Yes & King Crimson actually. Buddy Zimmerman turned us all on to Gentle Giant.

  2. Dave's biggest influence on me was the Tower of Power. He and I roomed together at a summer music camp at Western Michigan U., and one day he suggested I listen to what was on his reel-to-reel. Wow! The instrumentation and arrangements were so very unique and stylish. This weekend...I'm going to jam to TOP! Join me as a way to celebrate and remember Dave...truly, "What is Hip!"

  3. Chicago, most def...and Tower of Power.

Beyond that, I can't remember, cuz I partied way too much in high school:)

  4. Well, the first song I heard Dave's band play in 9th grade at Upton was "In the Country" by Chicago. I was totally hooked. Dave introduced me to Allman Bros, RTF, Tower of Power... I think Yes and Zappa we discovered mutually during our collective listening sessions. And Mr. Payne is right: Buddy Zimmerman was the Gentle Giant man in our collective. (I'm still not sure how they could play that music live... but there it is.)

  5. There were so many musicians that I had never heard of before I met Dave. Some that haven't already been named are Gary Burton, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, Stanley Clark, Brecker Brothers -- the list goes on. However, I do lay claim to getting Stevie Wonder into the mix! I remember when the SJHS jazz band did an arrangement of "You are the Sunshine of My Life" with Kay Stickney singing. I thought RWB was pretty cool to include that among all the traditional Big Band numbers.

  6. 32 years ago, Weather Report, in Boulder, Colorado. An epiphonephic (coining it) experience. Since then, Dave force fed me Chick Corea, but now he's incorporated in my regular musical diet. Dave and Lee re-introduced me Todd Rundgren (because I avoided him after the overplayed "Hello It's Me") but now he's a forerunner fav. A few months ago, I had the opportunity to turn the tables when I played Dave Edgar Winter's "Give It Everything You Got" and he expressed a "whoa!" We were both surprised that he hadn't explored that particular musical avenue before, but as he said at the time, "You can't know All of them." I bet Dave knew most of them, though. He was a true connoisseur and always embraced and delighted in sharing "quality stuff."

  7. Dave once put Sam barber's "Adagio for Strings" on the choir room sound system. I thought my heart was going to explode. Talk about opening a door to a whole 'nother world.

  9. Frank Zappa was a Micky Beckman discovery, remember him?

  10. Absolutely, John. Mickey was a great friend. Not a BS bone in his body--the one person you could count on to always tell you the truth, not just what he thought you wanted to hear.
And Lee, how come thanks for NOT mentioning Zappa?

  11. Okay...I'm not a Frank Zappa fan. Although I agree he was a genus and the music was great...I can only listen to 1 or 2 songs at a time. Dave, however, loved him.

  12. I still have the poster for the Sweet Cherry Resort Benefit poster with Frank Zappa on it saying Mickey Jam. I played with Dave & Tim on that one. Dave had a Sequential Circuits synthesizer with a sequencer on it that had a bad tempo knob. It worked well at rehearsal but I asked Dave not to use it at the show and he did and it failed. Not good when you are the drummer. I made homemade pizza with Mickey a couple days before the accident. I saw the ambulances pull up from my parents round shower room window that faces his house. He had stop taking the new medication that had made him sick.

  15. Great list Tim! But don't forget Passport...I remember one day Dave said with a wry smile, "hey Brum, ya gotta listen to this...it's German Jazz!"
